well designed home server (13.08.2010)
If you are in the market for a home server, this is one of the best options available. Lenovo has a reputation for solid build quality, and they have delivered that again here. It's visually attractive enough to be left in the open, and it's quieter than I expected (although not silent). The brightness of the front panel LEDs can be adjusted in the console software.
Performance is decent. It's not blazing fast, but streaming media and performing backups doesn't require a super fast CPU. Most important, this processor is 64 bit capable, which means that unlike some other home server options, this one can be upgraded to Home Server v2 that is due out in the next year. Once you turn on streaming, the home server shows up as a Library in any DLNA device. (Windows 7 computer, PS3, etc.) Much easier than I expected.
It comes with Microsoft's home server connector, which you have to install on at least one computer in your home to manage the server. That product is described in detail elsewhere, so I won't go into it too much except to say it's pretty intuitive and seems to work well. It also includes a couple of Lenovo-specific utilities, one of which integrates the home server folders into Windows Explorer and context menus -- a nice touch for people who don't know how to map shared drives otherwise.
It's possible to connect to it directly via remote desktop, although not recommended. This is the only way you'll experience the mediocre graphics card, since there is no display port for a physical monitor... but again, it isn't designed to ever have to display graphics itself, it's designed to send media to other machines where it will be displayed.
There seems to be some confusion about drives... this model ships with 2 1Tb drives (the Amazon listing is confusing, I checked the product number on the Lenovo website before I bought this). Home server does NOT do disk mirroring (RAID), it uses volume shadow copy to make your data redundant. This means that you get to choose what is stored in duplicate and what isn't. The system files themselves are duplicated for safety.
this is not one 2TB as described (04.08.2010)
Description says "2TB 7200RPM Serial ATA Hard Drive" but this is not the case. It's two 1TB HDDs. So instead of three open expansion bays I've got two. Somewhat disappointing.
Also, when it says "Intel GMA 950 Graphics" be clear that it has no graphics port at all; you need to use client connector software to set it up and then (I think) I'll be able to remote desktop to it. Fine by me, but potentially confusing as described in the tech specs.
Great buy for the most underrated Microsoft product ever! (19.07.2010)
I've been using this device for a couple of weeks now and don't know how I've lived without a Windows home server (WHS) for so long. While I hear there is a pending refresh to the WHS operating system, this product does absolutely everything I could ever ask. With multiple laptops at home and a PC in the office, being able to share data between machines seemed rather cumbersome (even for an IT professional).
In less than 2 hours, I had this machine setup and running on all of my PC's and my iMac. Setup was fairly easy for me, but I am not the average consumer. I think that the average Joe may find the setup a bit more difficult than a home PC, but it was not too crazy.
I'm not sure if this device is upgradeable to the new WHS when it comes out ("vail"), but for now I'd say this is a solid buy. I'm even looking at using add-ons for backing up all my server data with Amazon S3 storage. This will provide almost enterprise level disaster recovery for all of your computer's data. I'm only looking at sending S3 some of my key irreplaceable data like pictures which will help keep the cost minimal.
